UC Chimes: Carlyle United is on Facebook

It's hard to believe but the new church year has begun already. We've changed the colors from green to blue and there are all kinds of strangely dressed characters dropping in to our church services. This year's Advent theme is "Fresh Starts".

Contradictory wisdom

Some words just seem to roll deliciously around the tongue while others, more guttural in sound and pronunciation, seem harsher in meaning and more deliberate in their elocution. Take, for example, the word "oxymoron".

Pause for Reflection: November reflections and speaking in parabolas

Is childhood ever long enough, or a happy time, or even a beautiful summer day? All of these carry the seeds of the same fierce mystery that we call death.

Comfort one another

A friend told me of a visit to one of our local doctors. "Doc," he complained, "Sometimes I hurt in my knees, sometimes in my hands andah, I just seem to hurt somewhere all the time.

Pause for Reflection: The power of love and the danger of hatred

I had a dream inspiration recently. It was set at Olswick's Dam, one half mile east of my childhood home on the prairie farm.

Pause for Reflection: Sinners and saints and where we place ourselves

What a blessing and what a privilege to live in Saskatchewan, the land of the living skies. Just today I looked up from the street to see an incredibly layered sky.

Pause for Reflection: Be not afraid but do be thankful - gratitude is the best prayer

They say that pessimists see the cup as half empty, and optimists see the cup as half full. My team hasn't even seen the cup. A sports joke.

Look into my eyes

"Look into my eyes" is a phrase with a whole bunch of connotations. The first and probably most obvious is the love story scenario.

Pause for Reflection: Counting our blessings and thanksgiving days

Two old friends bump into each other on the street one day. One of them is on the verge of tears.

Moving forward too fast

Don't know about you but my head's still spinning with the news of the last few weeks' events. It began as I, and the world, watched with awe at the miraculous rescue of thirty-three miners from their underground cave in Chile.
