UNITY — Each year, the annual Unity Western Days kicks off with a roast beef supper and the announcement of this year’s Citizen of the Year award. Although there were no formal nominations again this year, the Western Days committee took it upon themselves to award this honour to Joan Sperle.
Sperle, who grew up in the Unity area, is well known for her contributions to the Unity Ag Society. Each year, she has helped organize various events within the community through the Ag Society, including the annual Fall Fair and Tradeshow for over 30 years. She is also instrumental in organizing speakers and presenters to join the society for the popular Ag Safety Day for elementary students. As a member of the Unity Ag Society, the group was responsible for the ever-popular venue, the Agro-Plex, located near the rodeo grounds. Unfortunately, the building caught fire this past January, rendering it unusable. The Ag Society has been working with their insurance providers to figure out their next steps since the fire and saw the demolition of the charred remains in the early morning on May 24.
The honouree also volunteers her time in other areas. She is on the cemetery committee for the Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, a shop steward for S.E.I.U.-West, a board member for Prairie Branches and a member of Big Brothers Big Sisters. She is always willing to donate baking for bake sales or family functions.
When Sperle is not busy with her volunteering efforts in the community, she is often found in the kitchen at the Unity & District Health Centre. However, she is unlike any hospital cook. During special occasions, Sperle adds a bit of flair to the menu, such as chocolate-covered strawberries on Valentine’s Day, which are served to the long-term care residents, hospital patients, and staff. When meal service is 小蓝视频 done, she always takes a moment to say hello to everyone, with a big smile on her face and an infectious laugh that could brighten anyone’s day.
“Joan is a very kind, caring person- always there for friends and family, the best friend anyone could have. She is a busy, hardworking person who is very deserving of this award,” said Sadie Burns, Sperle’s sister in law.
As Sperle was 小蓝视频 recognized for her community involvement, she was surprised her name was said. Many of those who watched her receive the honour said she truly deserved it and all agreed on how much Sperle does for the community of Unity and its residents.
