Between The Lines: The emergence of the quarterback controversy

Five weeks of the Canadian Football League's regular season are in the books, and while some may say that the CFL season doesn't really start until Labor Day, I would argue that it doesn't begin until there's a quarterback controversy.

Five weeks of the Canadian Football League's regular season are in the books, and while some may say that the CFL season doesn't really start until Labour Day, I would argue that it doesn't begin until there's a quarterback controversy.

Hello Edmonton.

The Elks picked up their first win of the season, 39-33 over Ottawa last night. However, leading 22-3 in the second quarter, the Elks sat quarterback Trey Ford, who was nine-for-nine passing at the time, and inserted Cody Fajardo. Edmonton head coach Mark Killam was asked about the move.

“We had a plan going in. We had a plan that we were trying to give him some more snaps, and we stuck to it. It's an opportunity for Trey to step out of the fire for a minute and see what's going on, and I thought those guys handled it like pros.”

The 27-year-old Ford was officially given the keys to the Elks' offence this offseason after battling it out with other pivots the last two years, and he was okay with the move last night.

“Yeah, a little bit. I mean, it was a weird spot too because our iPads were down. We were kind of getting really bad angles. It was just like the pocket, and you're trying to see the defence, and you couldn't see anything. So not great, but yeah, I mean, it was definitely nice to get out there and let Cody get a feel for the game, and then I was able to talk to him a little bit about it. Every time I mess up, I feel like I mess up, or I do something right, I always go ask Cody. Oh yeah, you could have did this, you could have did that. So he's a nice dad out there for sure.”

Week six of the CFL season will kick off Friday when the Saskatchewan Roughriders host the Calgary Stampeders.
