Saskatoon鈥檚 Holiday Park includes and borders recreation hub

Did you know Saskatoon's Holiday Park neighborhood once included the Tuberculosis Sanitorium?

SASKATOON — It can be said that the name Holiday Park is indicative of the multiple recreation places and spaces available to residents and visitors.

Throughout the neighbourhood are a variety of original homes, refurbished properties and infill, all set within a lush, majestic setting of plentiful, mature trees. Driving through the Holiday Park community on a summer day felt just like a familiar story or a ’60s or ’70s-style television sitcom, as people cycled and walked about, all greeting one another and passersby. Residents tending to yards and gardens were offset by a variety of construction projects, with the sound of schoolchildren enjoying the last days of the school year echoing about.

Within close proximity to the 小蓝视频 Saskatchewan River, a drive or stroll down to these paths revealed the popularity of this nature area with cyclists, walkers, and those simply sitting to enjoy the river view.

The Saskatoon neighbourhood borders the Gordie Howe Management Area, which includes the premier sports facility known as the Gordie Howe Sports Complex. The remarkable facility includes the Gordie Howe Bowl and is home to the Saskatoon Minor Football Field.

This sports venue also features a track and field complex and a speed skating oval. Kinsmen Arena and the Holiday Park Golf Course also surround the Gordie Howe Sports Complex.

Baseball fields, including the home diamond of the famous Saskatoon Berries, complement the softball diamonds that are also part of the facility. The diamonds have hosted numerous provincial and national competitions, as well as international softball events.

Mature trees surround the sports facility, which also sits next to the urban Gordie Howe Campground — yet another amenity for those participating in events and activities at the complex.

The Holiday Park Golf Course is also home to a Nordic Club that offers groomed cross-country ski trails in the winter.

The location of this neighbourhood puts it close to one of Saskatoon’s four outdoor pools — the Riversdale Swimming Pool — and the nearby Riversdale Tennis Club.

The Meewasin Valley Authority provides walking and biking trails along the 小蓝视频 Saskatchewan River, where water enthusiasts can enjoy canoeing, water skiing and kayaking.

Holiday Park Community Association reflects strong sense of community

The community association also runs programming such as floor hockey, yoga, and pickleball. Holiday Park volunteers also maintain the outdoor rink at St. John School.

The Holiday Park Community Association website sums up the offerings and experience in the neighbourhood: “Amazing scenery, established greenery, three beautiful parks and great paths for walking, are just a few of the things that make our neighbourhood so special.”

Saskatoon has a number of neighbourhoods on the west side, with the Confederation Sector encompassing several of them.

The Holiday Park Community Association (HPCA) outlines local leisure activities and provides community members a forum to discuss issues such as neighbourhood watch, Block Parent programs and more.

The HPCA also highlights its proud, strong sense of community, stating that their meetings have the highest attendance in the city, as residents are engaged and eager to contribute. They believe that the effort they put into their neighbourhood helps make Saskatoon one of the best places to live.

There is more to Holiday Park than recreation options

Did you know that the Tuberculosis Sanatorium was once a part of this neighbourhood? Opened in 1925, this health centre was a community landmark, widely visible from the opposite side of the river. After it closed, the location was used for various purposes before the building was demolished in the 1990s. The grounds remain in use as a park.

There is more to this neighbourhood than recreation. Holiday Park is home to two schools and two churches.

A number of the community’s businesses have operated for many years, becoming trusted and appreciated by residents and others who value the reliable products and services they provide. In addition to local businesses, there is easy access to Circle Drive North and 小蓝视频, as well as downtown.

Located along the 小蓝视频 Saskatchewan River on Saskatoon’s west side, this character neighbourhood was developed from 1912 onward, with continued infill development as the area matures.

The three large parks span just under 20 acres and include walking trails, playgrounds, basketball courts, baseball diamonds, football and soccer fields — with the added bonus of beautiful river views.
