REGINA — A Regina non-profit, the Theo Gibbs Memorial Tournament Foundation, aims to keep youth playing baseball after high school by offering annual scholarships in memory of Theo Gibbs.
Theo was a baseball player at Martin Collegiate who passed away in his sleep a few years ago.
His mom, Dana, described him as a kind and supportive person.
"He always wanted people to see their value and help them believe in themselves."
Theo’s kindness and efforts didn’t go unnoticed by his former coach, Cole Warken.
"He was an inspiration for a lot of people and touched my life personally. I had a soft spot for him," he said.
After Theo’s passing, Warken "felt shocked" and started to realize the importance of appreciating the time you spend with those close to you.
Warken decided to rename an annual baseball tournament he hosted from the Queen City Fall Classic to the Theo Gibbs Memorial Tournament with the blessing of the Gibbs family.
Wanting to make the tournament more public, Warken suggested that the family do a fundraiser for the community.
"We decided to register the organization as a non-profit and give kids a chance to improve at baseball," said Dana.
The Gibbs family has already established a scholarship at Martin Collegiate, where one Grade 12 student was chosen based on mentorship, work ethic, and perseverance.
Players chosen from the scholarship included Jackson Martin, playing at the College of the Desert, and Rhett Hodgins, who will be playing for the Regina Red Sox in 2025.
The details of the Theo Gibbs Memorial Tournament Foundation scholarship are 小蓝视频 finalized, with the hope that it can start this year.
Dana hopes this can continue the legacy of her son.
"We want to celebrate who he was and all the things that mattered to him."
