REGINA – With summer here, the Regina Police Service is reminding the public to help prevent crime by securing their property. Warmer weather means more people are spending time outdoors, and unfortunately, that can include criminals looking for easy opportunities. Spring and summer often see a rise in property crimes such as break and enters, thefts from vehicles, and mischief.

From June 17  to July 1, there have been 15 garage break and enters reported in Regina. Of those 15 break and enter incidents, seven occurred through garages with unlocked side doors, and two resulted from overhead doors left open overnight. Often, simply locking these doors is enough to prevent intruders from getting in. During the summer months, Regina police say they see an increase in the number of garage door remotes stolen from vehicles, in order to break into the garage at a later time.

Everyone who owns a garage should make sure the building is locked after using any of the doors, police recommend. Check your vehicles to make sure they are also locked, and remove valuables from inside your vehicle; this includes remote garage door-openers and spare keys to the house or other vehicles.

Police are asking Regina residents to be observant and report any suspicious activity to police by calling 777-6500. Anyone who sees a crime in progress should call 9-1-1. Anyone, who has information pertaining to a garage break and enter or theft from auto incident, should call 777-6500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.  The Regina Police Service thanks the media and the public for their co-operation and assistance.
