REGINA — News of EVRAZ North America’s sale is 小蓝视频 welcomed by the United Steelworkers union (USW), including Regina steel operations represented by USW Local 5890 and Calgary operations represented by USW Local 6673.
On Friday, it was reported that Atlas Holdings has signed a definitive agreement to acquire EVRAZ North America. Atlas Holdings, based in Greenwich, Connecticut, owns and operates 27 companies with over 350 facilities and a workforce of over 57,000 employees.
The USW said that with uncertainty facing EVRAZ North America following sections on the company's former owner, this sale provides a path forward for thousands of workers in North America, while bringing new opportunities and investment into Canada.
“This has been a long and difficult process for our members, who have worked through uncertainty with professionalism and pride in their work,” said Mike Day, President of USW Local 5890, representing workers at the Regina facility.
EVRAZ North America operates a facility in Regina, with roughly 1,200 workers as of 2022.
“We’re hopeful this marks the beginning of a long and positive relationship with Atlas. Our members are ready to continue doing what they do best by producing high-quality Canadian steel that supports our economy and our communities," he added.
The USW also said they are committed to working with new ownership and all levels of government to ensure the Regina and Calgary facilities play a continued role in both provinces’ economic future.
“We look forward to continuing our relationship with Atlas and to continue building Saskatchewan and Alberta by pushing all levels of government to procure steel domestically and support good-paying, local jobs,” said Scott Lunny, USW director for Western Canada.
“This is a chance to refocus on growing Canada’s steel industry, ensuring that public projects are built with Canadian steel and by Canadian workers.“
The USW will speak with Atlas and stakeholders over the coming months to ensure a smooth transition, while prioritizing job security, and advocate for policies that support a strong domestic steel sector.
The sale of EVRAZ North America is expected to take place in the second half of 2025.
EVRAZ North America also operates facilities in Alberta, Oregon and Colorado. Meanwhile, their headquarters are based in Chicago, Illinois.
