Unity Cardinals are homeless for start of NSRBL season

Phase One of the diamond renovation project is still underway, says Senior Cardinals' spokesperson.

UNITY — There’s no place like home, but not quite yet for the Unity Cardinals. Team spokesperson, Cory Wildeman, affirms that Phase One of the diamond renovation project is still 小蓝视频 completed. The senior men’s North Saskatchewan River Baseball League is slated to start May 12.

This means the Cards' season begins as scheduled, only they will be calling the Wilkie diamonds home for the time 小蓝视频. Their opening game is May 12, playing Lloydminster Twins.

“Sprinklers and field levelling will be completed in two weeks. Further sloping/grading outside of the playing field will be completed by June,” Wildeman said.

The senior Cardinal veteran player has been a key member of the Cardinals’ diamond revitalization project.

“Dugouts are set for fabrication in June. Sod installation is dependent on when it will be ready. We want to get the first batch of grass for sure,” Wildeman added.

The team is currently sourcing bleacher fabrications and says they are working hard to get the playing field ready for July 15, as the Sundevils and U18 Cardinals also want to play some games on the diamond then.

The NSRBL will include eight teams with reigning league champions, the North Battleford Beavers along with Mervin, Standard Hill, Lloydminster Twins, Glaslyn, Lashburn, Oil City Ducks, and of course, the Unity Cardinals.

According to this newly released schedule, the Wilkie Brewers, who hold a long history of NSRBL success, will not be playing in this senior men’s baseball league this season. A former Brewers player said that while they tried to make it work, there was not enough local interest to have a team.

Senior men’s baseball fans in Wilkie have the opportunity to watch the Unity Cardinals on their diamond until Unity’s diamond renovation project is complete. Wilkie fans will see a familiar face as Wildeman, a Cards pitcher, played one season with the Brewers.

Overseeing and leading the league for the 2025 season of the NSRBL will continue with Unity’s Regan L’Heureux and Wilkie’s Lorne Nielsen, sharing duties as co-commissioners.

With the Unity Cardinals retiring their 60-year-old baseball diamond after the 2024 season, visiting teams will now see a new diamond in Unity, once it is ready.
