KERROBERT— Although he wears a jersey for the Melfort Mustangs, many Kerrobert hockey fans are cheering on Austin Shepherd as he heads to Calgary, Alta., to compete for the second consecutive year at the Centennial Cup.

“We came up one goal short last year so we are looking to be on the winning side this year,” said the 20-year-old forward.

With the first game of the cup slated for May 8, Shepherd said he is excited to represent the SJHL and continue to put on the Mustang jersey alongside his teammates.

“Winning this would be an absolute honour with this group of guys. We have a very special group and we are one of the hardest-working teams. This win would not only be for us boys, but our coaches put so much time and effort into us and getting us to where we are right now,” added Shepherd.

The forward said the highlight of the season was winning the Canterra Seeds Cup for a second year and beating the franchise record for most wins in a season, with many fans, supporters and the Mustang organization cheering on the team all year long.

Shepherd plans to come home during the offseason to help on the family’s farm, spend time at the lake with family and connect with friends before making the move to Saskatoon to continue hockey training and work.
